It's obvious that creative designs have a unique ability to sell a product or idea through proper effective visual communications. California governor signs bills to make textbooks lighter on wallets and backpacks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - China said on Thursday that the disagreement over Iran's nuclear program had reached "a new, crucial stage," calling for Tehran to begin a new round of talks with world powers, something a U.S. official said could happen at some point. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made the comment after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a speech drawing a "red line" for Iran's nuclear program on Thursday, despite a U.S. refusal to set an ultimatum, saying Tehran will be on the brink of a nuclear weapon in less than a year. ...

Health and Fitness: The 80/20 Rule | South Lake Tahoe ...

Peace of Mind Float Spa L.L.C. is Lake Tahoe's premiere Sensory Deprivation (Float Tank) destination. We provide 2 float tanks as well as a Far Infared Sauna and an Aroma Therapy Oxygen Bar to enhance your complete flotation experience. Operated by Karin and Darin Nobriga, long time Tahoe locals. We provide the most relaxing mind and body experience in the Tahoe basin.

We're located at 290 Kingsbury Grade, Stateline, Nevada next to the Goal Post and a quarter mile from the Stateline casinos. We offer local and casino employee discounts and encourage those who haven't floated, to try the most relaxing experience of their lives.
What is Floating?
Floating is a therapeutic treatment that isolates the user from environmental stimulus, greatly reducing stress, and easing the body into a state of equilibrium. Floating is also known as flotation therapy, floating therapy, float therapy, restricted environmental stimulation therapy (or REST), and Epsom salt hydrotherapy. The flotation tank is referred to as an isolation tank, sensory deprivation chamber, float tank, floating tank, and rest tank.

The flotation tank itself is a sensory deprivation pod with 10 inch deep water warmed to 93.5 degrees and enriched with 800 pounds of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). The tank has an advanced filtration/purification system that operates according to regulations from the State of Nevada.

The space inside is approximately 8 feet long by 4 feet wide. Although some may be wary of feeling claustrophobic the first time they float, the tank door opens freely and you are in complete control. You can come and go as you wish. You can also float with the door open. For those who would like audio stimulation, relaxing music is available.
The experience of floating is unique. Inside the tank you?ll float effortlessly on the surface of 93.5 degree water. Floaters feel a sense of weightlessness. That weightlessness, the temperature of the water, and the dark, quiet space of the tank allow the brain to ease into a theta* brain wave state. This usually happens in the second half hour of a one hour float session. First time floaters should not expect instant results. Generally it takes more than one float to completely ?let go? and fully experience flotation.

Well-dressed robbers sought in brazen NYC heist

By Shimon Prokupecz and Ida Siegal, NBCNewYork.com

Police are looking for a pair of armed robbers behind a brazen jewelry store heist in midtown Manhattan.

Two well-dressed armed men?walked into Madison Jewelers at 400 Madison Ave. Friday afternoon and asked to see some watches.

"A gentleman came in, looking at some Rolex watches," store owner Joseph Krady told NBC 4 New York. "When I asked him, 'Which one would you like to take?' he pulled out a gun and said, 'I'm gonna take them all'."

View NBCNewYork.com's full story on heist

The gunman had an accomplice, and the two took all the watches from the window display and some jewelry.?

After Krady did all he was instructed to do, the robbers pepper-sprayed him before fleeing.

"I couldn't see anything," he said. "It was the most painful thing."?

"I always feel very safe in the shop, it's a wide open area," said Krady. "It's busy, there's people around. You don't think anything like this could happen to you."??

Liver cells, insulin-producing cells, thymus can be grown in lymph nodes

Friday, September 28, 2012

Lymph nodes can provide a suitable home for a variety of cells and tissues from other organs, suggesting that a cell-based alternative to whole organ transplantation might one day be feasible, according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and its McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. In a report recently published online in Nature Biotechnology, the research team showed for the first time that liver cells, thymus tissue and insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, in an animal model, can thrive in lymph nodes despite being displaced from their natural sites.

Hepatitis virus infection, alcoholic cirrhosis and other diseases can cause so much damage that liver transplantation is the only way to save the patient, noted senior investigator Eric Lagasse, Pharm. D., Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Pathology, Pitt School of Medicine. Children with DiGeorge syndrome lack functional thymus glands to produce essential immune cells, and diabetes can be cured with a pancreas transplant.

"However, the scarcity of donor organs means many people will not survive the wait for transplantation," said Dr. Lagasse, whose lab is at the McGowan Institute. "Cell therapies are being explored, but introducing cells into tissue already ravaged by disease decreases the likelihood of successful engraftment and restoration of function."

In the study, his team tested the possibility of using lymph nodes, which are abundant throughout the body and have a rich blood supply, as a new home for cells from other organs in what is called an "ectopic" transplant.

They injected healthy liver cells from a genetically-identical donor animal into lymph nodes of mice at various locations. The result was an enlarged, liver-like node that functioned akin to the liver; in fact, a single hepatized lymph node rescued mice that were in danger of dying from a lethal metabolic liver disease. Likewise, thymus tissue transplanted into the lymph node of mice that lacked the organ generated functional immune systems, and pancreatic islet cell transplants restored normal blood sugar control in diabetic animals.

"Our goal is not necessarily to replace the entire liver, for example, but to provide sufficient cell mass to stabilize liver function and sustain the patient's life," Dr. Lagasse said. "That could buy time until a donor organ can be transplanted. Perhaps, in some cases, ectopic cell transplantation in the lymph node might allow the diseased organ to recover."

Across the country in 50 days - USU Statesman - Utah State University

Many students are creative in their attempts to relieve stress, but Director of Campus Recreation Kevin Kobe used a technique last spring that few students have ever employed, embarking on a seven week cycling trip spanning the width of the United States.

???

?I like to go and come back with the batteries recharged,? said Kobe.

???

Kobe made the 3,150 mile trip with his longtime friend Josh Archibald, who has accompanied Kobe on many cycling tours over the years. Kobe said they started planning the trip six months beforehand, in the middle of a heavy workload involving preparation for the vote on the Aggie Recreation Center and Legacy Field. They started their trip on March 3, 2012 by taking rental bus to San Diego, Calif., where they would begin cycling.

???

?We left the day after the vote passed on the Legacy Field project and Recreation Center, with our bikes in the water in the Pacific Ocean at Ocean Beach Park,? Kobe said.

??

Kobe said to make this trip he took his Specialized Expedition touring bike, which he purchased in the 80?s and cost him approximately $150.

???

?It?s the same bike I commute with every day,? he said. ?It?s basically an old touring bike.?

???

Kobe said their whole goal was to not have the bikes loaded down ? they wanted to bring just enough to be comfortable.

???

?If something didn?t have more than one use, we didn?t bring it,? Kobe said.

???

He said their clothing was not specific to cycling and they didn?t wear the typical cycling garb of spandex shorts and jerseys, but rather long sleeve button-up shirts ? to protect them from the sun ? and regular nylon shorts with pockets.

???

?We could walk into a diner and look like regular people,? he said. ?People told us we looked like we were on a weekend bike tour.?

???

Auto Accident Dos and Don'ts Checklist | Cheap Car Insurance

It is not uncommon when involved in an auto accident to experience panic and get confused by everything going on around you. It is sound advice to keep a checklist with you in the unfortunate event you are involved in an auto accident.

Familiarize yourself with the list and review it periodically. An accident ?do and don?t? checklist can end up making the difference in how your case turns out.

Don?t lose your head. There?s no need to panic because you?ve already prepared yourself regarding what steps to take.

Don?t discuss accident specifics with anyone other than law enforcement, and even then stick to facts only. Do not place blame on yourself or others.

Don?t ever leave the scene of an accident. It will only worsen the situation.

Don?t agree to a settlement or sign any type of statement without consulting an attorney first.

Don?t attempt to ?work it out? with other involved parties without contacting law enforcement. An accident report should be completed by the proper authorities immediately after the accident occurs. Do not let an at fault party persuade you to accept cash for repairs to avoid having the accident go on their driving record.

Don?t be too anxious to leave the scene. Once things calm down, you can park in a safe area and go over the accident details in your mind while everything is fresh. Sketch details on paper, and make notes on anything that comes to mind about the accident.

Do call 911 immediately for medical assistance if anyone is injured in the accident.

Do contact the police to complete an accident report and document the specifics. Failure to do so will result in the other party?s word against yours.

Do contact your insurance company promptly after the accident occurs.?

Do take pictures of all damages to vehicles, the scene of the accident, and the surrounding area. What may seem unimportant at the time may prove to be very useful later. Some things to look for include traffic lights and/or signs, the position of the stopped vehicles, weather conditions, skid marks, etc.

Use sound judgment and common sense, and be prepared in advance. Hopefully you won?t find yourself in this situation, but in case you do, you?ll certainly be glad you took the time beforehand to prepare so you can handle the incident for the best possible results. Wear your seat belt, drive safely, and obey all traffic laws at all times.

?Green? Companies Need A Social Media Team! | StAug News

?Green? Companies Need A Social Media Team!

?

The world has two major facets that are growing and expanding each and every day. One is the world of social media. The other, is the world of ?green? companies; businesses that are looking at teaching more about the environment, as well as offering products and services to enable the globe to ?go green? and reduce our carbon footprint.

?

If one takes a look, there are companies that offer products in all realms of recycling, refurbishing, landscaping ? indoors and out of doors, there are companies sprouting up that wish to make their mark with products, supplies, etc., of the ?green? variety.

?

The Be First Network - the social media experts, if you will ? are looking to help these ?green? companies. Not only does Be First Media Group ?have a solid background where the realm of sustainability comes into play, but they also offer serious experts that include writers, graphic artists, online magazines, news, websites, constantly streaming media and more, that can take you ?green? business and get it out there in the public eye. Be First Media Group ?is the team with the knowledge to increase your business by increasing your ?buzz? and building an audience for you that will be loyal, and help spread the word about you and your latest product and/or service for the consumer to make their lives ?greener.?

?

A ?green? business has even more factors that weigh in on whether or not they will become a success, and increasing an online community is necessary to build that business and make it soar. Be First Media Group ?has already had a history of working with companies like ?The Green Register,? which is an online magazine/news site and part of the Be First Network.

?

?The Green Register? offers any and all information and updates about the ?green? community; including the latest businesses, products and services that are becoming available each and every day. With this background, and their own personal mission to make the world a healthier place by saving the environment, Be First Media Group ?is constantly on the lookout to be the social media team that a ?green? company wants on their side.

?

Let?s be honest, here.? A ?green? company is different than a regular retailer, in the respect that ?green? marketing ? which means content spread across the internet, as well as the updating and managing of your company?s site, as well as the constant stream of information that goes out to the consumer ? is necessary to not only sell, but inspire change and even transform consumer behavior when it comes to helping our world.

?

?Green? companies are a huge part of changing society, and a ?green? brand is a powerful brand that can be marketed 24/7 in order to gain an audience and market share. To do this, blogs can be created, websites updated with the help of expert graphic artists and experienced writers, online banner advertising, Facebook and Twitter pages?and more.

?

Be First Media Group ?develops the precise marketing strategy for companies by working with them and laying out the plans and goals that the business needs in order to not only gain profits, but to also get the word out to the world that their ?green? brand is the one that is a must for the consumer to utilize.

?

When all is said and done, today?s consumer wants quality and value. That?s it; nothing more and nothing less. But the consumer also is a visual person (or social media would never have become as expansive as it has). Because the consumer is visual and because they know exactly how to do research and find out where the best products and services are located ? a ?green? company needs to build a sense of familiarity with their audience. Again, the social media team that you hire is mega-important in this respect!

?

There are major environmental values out there in the world and your business ? your ?green? brand ? could supply these values with the correct merchandise, data, mission, philosophy ? and Be First Media Group ?can and will make that happen!

?

According to sources over 90% of companies say that social media is becoming more important to their overall marketing strategy than anything else. And to get in touch with the community out there ? to make your ?green? brand into one of the most ?buzzed? about subjects on the internet ? requires a specific team that knows the background of ?green? marketing. (Not a team who believes any and all graphics for a ?green? company should include a forest or a babbling brook).

?

A profile must be made by you for your business. But the social media team behind you needs to have the knowledge to help you decide what channels are necessary in order to get an audience on your side and TO your profile page. You have an objective and Be First Media Group?can help you establish your expertise for the ?green? community. They can make sure that the online groups you engage in are the right ones. And they can make sure that your social media campaign is done in a way that makes it easy for customers to make contact with your company in order for communication to flow, thereby, increasing your audience and your profits.

?

There are market trends, there are consumer demands, there are competitors that need to be monitored, there is an industry that must be watched and researched 24/7 ? and Be First Media Group ?is the team that can do that.

?

When it comes to any business, guidance is necessary when entering the fast-paced world of social media. The Be First Network not only looks out for businesses but truly believes in the ?green? community and the environmental companies that are out there just waiting to appear, promote and sell their products.

?

If you are a company that specializes in ?green? ? the Be First Network can earn you even more ?green? and transform your company ? whether it be a small, upstart or an established company ? into THE company that has more ?buzz? surrounding it than a colony of honey bees buzzing around the Queen!

Production-ready Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive supercar unveiled

We're pretty sure we've suffered some amount of vision loss from staring at the ridiculously bright paint scheme on Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell over the past few years. MB has rolled it out at virtually every auto show it can and we've always stopped for a gander, but now we finally have the full production version -- and it's in a slightly more tame but visually perhaps even more stunning color, a sort of chrome blue that even in the flesh looks CG rendered. It's the SLS AMG Electric Drive, it's launching next June and we have the full details after the break.

Why Criticism of Religion is So Necessary | Cardus Blog

After two weeks of riots across the Muslim world, ostensibly due to an offensive amateur YouTube video which insults the Prophet Muhammad, many people across the non-Muslim world might agree that the reaction to the offense far exceeds the offense itself. There is a collective sense of deja vu as we recall the Danish cartoon controversy which erupted seven years ago. The difference is that this time, attacking embassies and burning US flags is occurring after the Arab spring, which is morphing into a Islamist winter.

Should criticism of religion be allowed, particularly when it can lead to such violent reactions?

Offense to religious beliefs has been the focus of the ?defamations of religion? clause which Pakistan has sought to have added to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This dangerous idea undercuts two other human rights currently protected in the declaration: the freedom of religious belief, and the freedom of expression. Pakistan is home to some of the worst examples of how the rights of individuals are violated in the name of protecting religion.

As part of its Cardus Education Survey report being released today, Cardus explored these issues and others with graduates of Christian schools, religious home schools, Catholic schools, and public schools. The results are instructive and reveal different points of view even between these sectors on questions which are currently front page news.

Asked to agree or disagree with the statement, ?People should be allowed to say things in public that might be offensive to religious groups,? respondents answered as follows: Catholic students disagreed most strongly, in essence arguing against freedom of speech; independent Catholic and public school students strongly agreed. Evangelical Protestant and home school students were more noncommittal on this question. At the core of this question is the secular balancing act of freedom of expression versus respect of differences.

To the statement, ?Religion is a private matter that should be kept out of public debates about social and political issues,? the Catholic and public school students agreed, whereas the independent Catholic, Evangelical Protestant, and home school students disagreed. The Catholic student responses on these two questions alone reveal an inner contradiction?on the one hand, they argue against free speech, yet also believe that religion is a private matter.

On the wider questions of tolerance of other faiths, marked differences exist. To the statement, ?Society should be more tolerant of non-Christian religions,? independent Catholics and public school students were in agreement, while Evangelical Protestant and home school students very strongly disagreed. These students clearly want religion to be respected in the public sphere, but may feel there are already too many public concessions for non-Christian religions.

So even amongst a range of North American students, there are differing views on questions of tolerating other faiths, and public criticism of religion.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the following in a speech after the Benghazi attacks which left four American diplomatic personnel dead.

I so strongly believe that the great religions of the world are stronger than any insults. They have withstood offense for centuries . . . Refraining from violence, then, is not a sign of weakness in one?s faith; it is absolutely the opposite, a sign that one?s faith is unshakable.

Criticism of religion must be tolerated in order to protect freedom of speech. And as Clinton points out, religion needs no defense against offense. Response to offense is a kind of barometer for social and civil maturity, and a core belief that the individual?s right to expression and belief trumps any ideology or religion.

To try to prevent criticism of religion or religious offense is virtually impossible. Ironically, it only serves to unleash greater intolerance and discrimination against those who have created the offense. The recent deaths, damaged embassies, and burning flags are ample evidence of that.

Obama summons world leaders to reject extremism

(AP) ? Confronting global tumult and Muslim anger, President Barack Obama exhorted world leaders Tuesday to stand fast against violence and extremism, arguing that protecting religious rights and free speech must be a universal responsibility and not just an American obligation.

"The impulse towards intolerance and violence may initially be focused on the West, but over time it cannot be contained," Obama warned the U.N. General Assembly in an urgent call to action underscored by the high stakes for all nations.

The gloomy backdrop for Obama's speech ? a world riven by deadly protests against an anti-Islamic video, by war in Syria, by rising tension over a nuclear Iran and more ? marked the dramatic shifts that have occurred in the year since the General Assembly's last ministerial meeting, when democratic uprisings in the Arab world created a sense of excitement and optimism. Obama had tough words for Iran and condemned anew the violence in Syria as Bashar al-Assad tries to retain power.

Six weeks before the U.S. presidential election, an unmistakable campaign element framed Obama's speech as well: The president's Republican rival, Mitt Romney, has tried to cast him as a weak leader on the world stage, too quick to apologize for American values.

Romney, speaking at a Clinton Global Initiative forum just miles from the U.N., avoided direct criticism of Obama in deference to the apolitical settings of the day, but he said he hoped to return a year later "as president, having made substantial progress" on democratic reforms.

Obama, likewise, avoided direct politicking in his speech but offered a pointed contrast to his GOP opponent's caught-on-tape comment that there is little hope for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

"Among Israelis and Palestinians," Obama said, "the future must not belong to those who turn their backs on a prospect of peace."

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's opening state-of-the-world speech to the General Assembly's presidents, prime ministers and monarchs sketched the current time as one when "too often, divisions are exploited for short-term political gain" and "too many people are ready to take small flames of indifference and turn them into a bonfire."

The leaders are assembled here as anger still churns over a made-in-America video that mocked the Prophet Muhammad. The video helped touch off protests throughout the Muslim world that have left at least 40 people dead, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

Obama, a onetime professor of constitutional law, delivered what amounted to a lecture on what he presented as the bedrock importance of free speech, even if it comes at a price.

He stressed that just as the "cruel and disgusting" video did not reflect U.S. values, the backlash against it did not represent the views of most Muslims. Still, he said, "the events of the last two weeks speak to the need for all of us to address honestly the tensions between the West and the Arab world that is moving towards democracy."

Obama said the notion of controlling information is obsolete in the Internet age, "when anyone with a cellphone can spread offensive views around the world with the click of a button." But he said leaders must be swift to respond to those who would answer hateful speech with violence and chaos.

In his last international address before the November elections, the president had strong words for the leaders in Iran and Syria but broke no new ground on any actions the U.S. might take.

He warned that while there is still hope of resolving the dispute over Iran's nuclear program through diplomacy, "that time is not unlimited." Without laying out specifics, he added: "The United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

As for the rising violence in Syria, Obama told the U.N. delegates, "The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings. We must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence."

Obama's defense of free speech was respectfully received by world leaders. Yet it was clear that different understandings abound on the proper exercise of free expression.

The foreign minister of Indonesia, home to the world's largest Muslim population, said Obama's speech was a "clarion call" for all nations to reject intolerance, calling it "an issue that galvanizes all of us." But Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa added that freedom of expression should be exercised with consideration to morality and public order.

Dina Zakaria, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood's political party Freedom and Justice, said cultural differences between the U.S. and the Muslim and Arab world over the limitations of freedom of expression will persist.

"No one can argue against freedom of expression, but the Western understanding of it is different from ours," she said. "Will this freedom allow for contempt of religion? For us it is different. For us it is a red line as Muslims and Christians as well."

Obama did not hesitate to underline some of the hopeful developments in the world under his watch.

"The war in Iraq is over, and our troops have come home," he said. "We have begun a transition in Afghanistan, and America and our allies will end our war on schedule in 2014. Al-Qaida has been weakened, and Osama bin Laden is no more. Nations have come together to lock down nuclear materials, and America and Russia are reducing our arsenals."

In one lighter moment in a somber speech, Obama drew laughter from the Assembly with one comment in his remarks on free speech: "I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day."

Keen On? Crowdwire: What Twitter Teaches Us About Obama And Romney [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2012-09-25 at 2.00.48 AMAs the author of the New York Times' bestselling Hamlet's Blackberry, William Powers taught us how to build a good life in the digital age. And now Powers himself is doing just that. At Crowdwire, a Bluefin Labs funded project, Powers is using the tens of millions of Twitter and public Facebook comments to analyze the Presidential election. And as he told me over Skype, Crowdwire is providing analytical depth about voter sentiment that "nobody else has offered before." At Crowdwire, Powers really is going deeper with digital and, in particular, offering us remarkable insight into how women, minorities and other groups are perceiving the two candidates.

Apple TV update 5.1 brings shared photo streams and iTunes account swapping, available now

Apple TVs of the second and third-gen variety are getting update 5.1 today, which brings two long-awaited features. Both shared photo streaming and iTunes account switching are now part of Apple's set-top box -- the combination of those two finally freeing parents from the potential nightmare of discovering their child's "not safe for parents" photo streams, of course. The update, spotted by MacRumors, also adds some new AirPlay functionality, enabling users to "send audio content from Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs)." Beyond those two biggies, however, the rest of the update is rather nuts and bolts oriented -- head below for the full list.

President Obama argues against Mitt Romney's 'top-down economics'

MILWAUKEE - President Barack Obama worked to squash GOP hopes for a resurgence in pivotal Wisconsin on Saturday, pushing back against his GOP rival's complaints about an overly intrusive government and attracting his biggest crowd of the campaign. Mitt Romney took precious time away from campaigning in the battleground states to troll for cash in California and kept up his criticism of the president for fostering a culture of dependency.

The president faulted Romney for advancing a top-down economic approach that "never works."

"The country doesn't succeed when only the folks at the very top are doing well," he said. "We succeed when the middle class is doing well."

Obama, speaking to an energized throng of 18,000 people in an at-times-rainy outdoor amphitheater, made a point of renewing his pledge to create a million manufacturing jobs as he campaigned in a state whose manufacturing industry has been hard hit in recent years.

With just six weekends left before Election Day, both candidates were devoting considerable time to raising cash to continue bankrolling the deluge of ads already saturating hotly contested states.

Baseball great Hank Aaron supplied the star power at Obama's Milwaukee fundraisers.

"As one who wore the number 44 on his back for decades, I ask you to join me in helping the 44th president of the United States hit a grand slam," said Aaron.

Romney, who is expected to launch a more aggressive campaign schedule in the coming week, hunted for West Coast cash, if not votes, at a private fundraiser near San Diego and headed for another in Los Angeles. Some Republicans have grumbled that he's not spending enough time with voters in swing states, and Romney seemed to take note of that sentiment.

"I've got good news: This is the last fundraiser in San Diego," Romney told supporters. "I'm not even going to be able to go home today. We're just coming to town to see you and keep the campaign going. It's nonstop."

Romney adviser Kevin Madden said the GOP nominee would begin "a really intense battleground state schedule." The former Massachusetts governor will campaign in Colorado, Ohio and Virginia in the coming week.

With running mates Joe Biden and Paul Ryan campaigning in New England and Florida, respectively, the presidential campaign was spread far and wide - both geographically and strategically. Biden revved up union activists poised to canvass for votes in New Hampshire while Ryan appealed to Hispanic voters in Miami and talked space policy in Orlando.

It was Obama's first visit to Wisconsin since February, and the president was intent on shoring up support in Ryan's home state. Obama's politicking included an unscheduled stop at a local deli, where he tried out some bratwurst in a pretzel roll with spicy mustard - and managed to chat up a few patrons from Ohio, another crucial state.

Obama won Wisconsin easily in 2008 but Ryan is popular here and recent polls have Obama up by single digits. The GOP showed its organizational strength in fending off efforts to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker, but Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said Democrats "continue to have a strategic advantage," with more field offices and political infrastructure in the state.

With absentee voting already under way in the state, first lady Michelle Obama will campaign there next week.

Obama made the case against Romney before a crowd at the Milwaukee Theater, countering Romney's call to change Washington from the inside with an appeal to voters to help him break through partisan gridlock with pressure on Congress from the outside. He said that despite economic troubles, his administration has made progress and has made "practical and specific" proposals to create jobs.

"We've seen half a million new jobs in manufacturing, the fastest pace since the 1990s," he said. "And so the choice now is, do we reverse that progress or do we move forward?

Romney, at his fundraiser near San Diego, said Obama was "taking Americans on a course that is extremely foreign to us."

"One would suggest that government knows better than free people," he said. "It's a pathway to become like Europe, and Europe doesn't work there. It's never going to work here. It's even possible we could be on a pathway to become California -- I don't want that either."

In advance of Obama's visit, Romney's campaign made the argument that Obama's failure to turn around the economy had Wisconsin voters looking for a different path. Walker said the president had a "Wisconsin problem." The state's 7.5 percent unemployment rate is below the national average, but manufacturing has struggled.

The Republican National Committee released a web video, "Since You've Been Gone," highlighting recent GOP organizing efforts in the state and Walker's success in fending off recall.

Messina saw good signs all over, saying, "We're either tied or in the lead in every battleground state 45 days out. I think you will see a tightening in the national polls going forward."

Ryan, campaigning in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, reinforced Romney's argument that Obama hasn't been able to make needed changes in Washington, poking at the president's recent comment that it's hard to change Washington from the inside without mobilizing public pressure on Congress from the outside.

"Why do we send presidents to the White House in the first place?" Ryan asked. "We send presidents to change and fix the mess in Washington, and if this president has admitted that he can't change Washington, then you know what? We need to change presidents."

He also faulted Obama for a "policy of appeasement" toward the Castro regime in Cuba, saying all the president had done was "reward more despotism."

Obama has eased restrictions to allow Americans to travel to Cuba and to let Cuban-Americans to send money to family on the island. But the president has stopped well-short of discussing lifting the 50-year-old economic embargo, which is widely viewed in Latin America as a failure and has complicated U.S. relationships in the region.

Campaign spokeswoman Jenn Psaki said the president had supported democracy movements on the island and worked to give people there more say in their futures.

In an appearance in Orlando, not far from Florida's space coast, Ryan criticized the president for putting the U.S. space program "on a path where we are conceding our global position as the unequivocal leader in space." The Obama campaign responded that Ryan has proposed deep cuts in spending for space exploration.

Underscoring the importance of grass-roots efforts in the campaign's final days, Biden rallied union workers at a Teamsters union hall in Manchester, N.H., saying their organizing work would be the "antidote" to millions spent on advertising by Republican-leaning super PACs.

Biden said it was because of unions that the U.S. has a strong middle class, and he accused Romney and Ryan of having "a completely different value set, a completely different vision."

"They're doubling down on everything that caused the economic crisis in the first place," he said.

The GOP nominee is feeling fundraising pressure: Last month, for the first time in four months, Obama and the Democratic Party raised more than Romney and the Republican Party, $114 million to $111.6 million.

Flowers and Food in Sidra Forman's "Secret" Garden - Borderstan ...

Borderstan Welcomes new contributor?Melanie Hudson. Email her at melanie[AT]borderstan.com

Who has a Dutch tulip broker and a mushroom hunter on speed dial? One of our neighbors, that?s who. Sidra Forman, a lawyer by training, gave up her legal pad for gardening gloves and a chef?s knife and started a successful flower, garden, food, restaurant consulting and writing business all from her impeccable Borderstan home, and all based around a singular philosophy: simple and straightforward, with the best available ingredients from sources you trust.

Food from the garden. (Sidra Forman)

?My food is very clean, ingredient driven and healthy by nature. The best food for you happens to be the best tasting. You don?t need to sacrifice one or the other.?

For Sidra, food was what she had always done, though informally and at home with her family. She briefly practiced law before falling into her first foodie venture: a restaurant she started with her classically trained chef husband and front-of-house-manager brother, called Ruppert?s. Located on 7th?Street in a time ? the mid-90s ? before new businesses began opening on 7th?Street, their forward-thinking food philosophy matched their status as urban pioneers.

Sidra and her husband focused on ingredients, imparting to their guests the idea that the most delicious meals are very ingredient-driven, and that meat could be merely a foil for vegetables.

?So that means best available ingredients ? often means local, but doesn?t always mean local.? If I can get a beautiful white truffle from Italy I?m not going to not serve it because it?s not local. I know that sometimes I can find or purchase local chanterelles, but the season out in Oregon is long, and I have a great connection with a mushroom hunter out there, and I?m not going to not use them.?

After eight years at Ruppert?s, Sidra and her husband closed the restaurant and she turned her attention to flowers, which, she says, is the current centerpiece of her business.

Following the same ?ingredient-driven? and ?know your source? style, Sidra provides centerpieces and arrangements for weddings, corporate events, and parties, mostly through word of mouth and her website. Sidra sources her flowers from a variety of places: she grows some, including peonies, daisies, roses, and herbs and greens used as filler for arrangements; she buys some from local farms and wholesalers; and she purchases others from as far away as co-op farms in South America and the Dutch Auction, where she has a broker on call and can have flowers at her doorstep in two days. Working directly with her sources eliminates not only days from the process, but also increases the variety she can choose from ? and virtually ensures she is going to get the best available.

Similarly, Sidra knows where her food comes from ? meaning, in many cases, she knows the farmers who grew it. For example, when asked where she grocery shops, the answer is complex: her own garden, local farmers markets, Hana Japanese Market (17th?and U Streets NW), wholesale dry goods purveyor International Gourmet, Whole Foods, and home delivery from an Amish farmers? cooperative in Pennsylvania.

Forman?s career is full of diverse and multi-dimensional projects that lead tangentially to more projects, keeping her moving quickly from one thing to another. She has consulted on restaurants including old favorites like Perry?s and now-shuttered Viridian and Vegetate, and also found a successful career in food writing. With a longtime nutritionist friend, she has worked on books for lifestyle guru (and Oprah favorite) Bob Greene, including developing the recipes for several of his books.

But her favorite project and the one of which she is most proud, is helping to start the farm at Walker Jones Education Campus. She describes it as a real community effort, with neighbors, teachers, a librarian, and a principal taking over a huge piece of land, putting in some ?crazy manual labor?, pulling some strings, and ending up with a functioning vegetable garden for the school. Today the food is used in the cafeteria, sold at farmers markets, and taken home for dinner by the students.

?For those of us who can afford to buy food we have lots of options, unfortunately that?s not available for everyone,? Forman said.

Sidra is particularly tied to the neighborhood and has lived on 6th?Street NW, ?on the edge of Borderstan for 14 years. She has seen not only the arrival of Whole Foods in Logan Circle but the changes, both good and bad, that come with new neighbors and condo developments. Surprisingly, on her block the majority of neighbors have been there even longer than her family has ? meaning not only do they all know each other, they do the neighborly things most of us only wish for: warning each other about parking tickets, looking out for crime and apologizing in the one instance she says there was a break in ? apologizing for not seeing anything. ?It feels like people have your back,? she says.

Not one to rest on her success, Sidra has a book proposal in the works with an agent in New York on a ?new food trend? (she is vegan herself), including research on the science behind it and new recipes. She is busy pulling together flowers for multiple weddings each weekend, and? hosts monthly ?home restaurant? dinner parties serving food such as wood grilled quail with parsley; lamb sausage with fig, arugula, chestnut, balsamic vinegar and roasted garlic; and white peach with tomato and basil.

Plus, she has a 13-year-old ballerina daughter to worry about. It seems like a full plate for most people, but Sidra says it works due to the flexibility she has with her job.? She works a lot, all night sometimes, but can stop and take time to eat dinner with her family. ?I feel very lucky that I have been able to figure out a life that merges these two things.?
