Algae can draw energy from other plants

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Flowers need water and light to grow. Even children learn that plants use sunlight to gather energy from earth and water. Members of Professor Dr. Olaf Kruse's biological research team at Bielefeld University have made a groundbreaking discovery that one plant has another way of doing this. They have confirmed for the first time that a plant, the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, not only engages in photosynthesis, but also has an alternative source of energy: it can draw it from other plants. This finding could also have a major impact on the future of bioenergy. The research findings have been released on Tuesday 20 November in the online journal Nature Communications published by the renowned journal Nature.

Until now, it was believed that only worms, bacteria, and fungi could digest vegetable cellulose and use it as a source of carbon for their growth and survival. Plants, in contrast, engage in the photosynthesis of carbon dioxide, water, and light. In a series of experiments, Professor Dr. Olaf Kruse and his team cultivated the microscopically small green alga species Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in a low carbon dioxide environment and observed that when faced with such a shortage, these single-cell plants can draw energy from neighbouring vegetable cellulose instead. The alga secretes enzymes (so-called cellulose enzymes) that 'digest' the cellulose, breaking it down into smaller sugar components. These are then transported into the cells and transformed into a source of energy: the alga can continue to grow. 'This is the first time that such a behaviour has been confirmed in a vegetable organism', says Professor Kruse. 'That algae can digest cellulose contradicts every previous textbook. To a certain extent, what we are seeing is plants eating plants'. Currently, the scientists are studying whether this mechanism can also be found in other types of alga. Preliminary findings indicate that this is the case.

In the future, this 'new' property of algae could also be of interest for bioenergy production. Breaking down vegetable cellulose biologically is one of the most important tasks in this field. Although vast quantities of waste containing cellulose are available from, for example, field crops, it cannot be transformed into biofuels in this form. Cellulose enzymes first have to break down the material and process it. At present, the necessary cellulose enzymes are extracted from fungi that, in turn, require organic material in order to grow. If, in future, cellulose enzymes can be obtained from algae, there would be no more need for the organic material to feed the fungi. Then even when it is confirmed that algae can use alternative nutrients, water and light suffice for them to grow in normal conditions.

SpongeBob Christmas special goes stop-motion

(AP) ? How does "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" squeeze even more fun out of our porous little hero and the Bikini Bottom gang? By turning the animated characters three-dimensional for their holiday special.

In a tribute to classic fare such as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," the "SpongeBob SquarePants" crew has been re-imagined as puppets and put through their comedy paces for stop-motion photography.

The story line as dreamed up by Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob, and his musical collaborator Andy Paley: The denizens of Bikini Bottom are suddenly rude because of exposure to jerktonium, a plot by naughty Plankton to get on Santa's (voiced by guest star John Goodman) nice list.

Plankton "wants to put everyone on their worst behavior when they should be on their best behavior, and zany mayhem ensues," Kenny said.

"It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" debuts 9:30 p.m. EST Friday on CBS, followed by an encore on the show's home network, Nickelodeon, at 7:30 p.m. EST Sunday, Dec. 9.

The first-time foray into stop-motion is a welcome change for the 13-year-old "SpongeBob," Kenny said.

"It's fun that after all these years we can still do stuff that's a little different. It's like reinventing the wheel a little bit ? if you can refer to a square character as a wheel," he added, unable to resist the quip.

The actor looks back fondly on childhood memories of "Rudolph" from the Rankin-Bass studio and other stop-action projects. Even the TV commercial that put Santa on an electric razor subbing for a sleigh gets a Kenny shoutout.

Asked if young viewers might be fazed by seeing the familiar characters in a new guise, Kenny mulled the question before rebutting it.

"The characters act the same, the recording process is exactly the same. Our job is exactly the same. ... There's still plenty of the animated mayhem and anarchy that happens in the 2-D version of the show."

Screen Novelties, the Los Angeles studio that produced the Christmas special, made a feast out of the job. In just one of their inventive approaches, filmmakers used fruit-flavored cereal to create a coral reef.

"I came to the studio and they had hundreds of boxes of cereal open and were hot-gluing it together," Kenny recalled.

The Patrick Star puppet was covered in wool-like material and SpongeBob "wasn't a sponge but some kind of weird material they found somewhere," he said. "They're like 'MacGyver,' always repurposing something."

The TV special has a small element of recycling. Kenny calls it a testament to "a goofy little song" he and Paley wrote three years ago ? "Don't Be a Jerk, (It's Christmas)."

"Bring joy to the world, it's the thing to do. But the world does not revolve around you. Don't be a jerk, it's Christmas" is among its bouncy yet cautionary verses.

The tune is among a dozen included on the digital release "It's a SpongeBob Christmas! Album," most written by Kenny and Paley (a songwriter-producer who's worked with artists including Brian Wilson and Blondie). Four songs are part of the special.

Music fans might want to check out the album for its craftsmanship. The veterans who play on it include harpist Corky Hale and harmonica player Tommy Morgan, both of whom have backed a roster of big stars, including Billie Holliday and Frank Sinatra.

The recording sessions proved an early holiday gift for Kenny.

"We'd spend a half-hour working and then make the musicians tell stories about who they played with," he said.

There's More To Fitness Than Training Every Single Day | Health ...

Getting fit and healthy is more complicated than starting to exercise a few times a week. Of course exercise is still important. Your body needs exercise to keep its muscles and joints working correctly. Here?s the thing: real fitness means eating healthy as well as making good lifestyle choices. Exercise is just a small part of real fitness. That said, it is also a good idea to put together a good workout routine. The good news is that everyone can exercise and get fit. Even someone who has no experience with exercise can develop a routine for fitness that makes him healthier and more athletic. Here are some ideas to help you out.

Work your entire body. Don?t take advice from people who try to tell you that the only parts of your body that need focus are the parts you do not currently like. To be successful you will need to put together a routine that will work your whole body and all of its systems. Cardiovascular work, endurance work and strength work are all necessary. You will need to work all of your muscles if you truly want your body to get healthy. Concentrating on just a few areas will only ?beef up? those same areas which will make you feel bigger than you felt before you started working out.

Get help from a personal trainer. You are probably flirting with the idea of joining a gym (or quite possibly have already paid to join one). Many gyms have personal trainers on hand who can help you figure out a fitness and exercise routine to help you get healthy. Your personal trainer will teach you how to use the machines and gym equipment, tell you which fitness classes you should take and help you decide just how much time you should be spending working out each day. Your personal trainer will also act as your own personal cheerleader. Beginning a workout routine can be intimidating. Having a person by your side who knows what he or she is doing and who is invested in your success can help combat your nerves.

Workout with your friends as a group. Even if everyone in your group shares your level of inexperience, you can keep each other in check as you all work to be fitter. Having your friends working alongside you as you work to get healthy is far more fun than trying to do it all alone. It helps to have a group of people with you who will get on your case if you start to slack off. Having someone to keep you focused and on track is very important. Following a fitness routine with your friends is a lot easier than only ever working out alone. Just about every person on earth wants to be fitter. Lots of people wish that they were stronger and had better endurance levels. We all wish that we felt better. The biggest problem we face is not knowing what kind of changes to make to help us achieve our goals. Don?t let yourself feel overwhelmed. Each person has to find a starting point! There are people everywhere who are in the same place that you are in today. The important thing is that you know what you want to do. Now you just have to get up and do it!

These particular tips will be really effective to develop muscle mass and also to shed fat. Should you one of those folks that are looking for a methods to burn fat and build lean muscle faster, then check the following post on Rusty Moore and learn about a well-known system to burn fat and build lean muscle without any drugs.

There is also much more about how to lose fat and gain muscle here.

Climate Scientists Applaud Dire World Bank Report

Climate scientists who have been warning of the dangerous effects of global warming now have the World Bank on their side, after a new report from that organization calling for action to prevent climate catastrophe.

"The World Bank did a great service to society by issuing this report," said Michael Mann, a climate researcher at Pennsylvania State University and the author of "The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars" (Columbia University Press, 2012).

Climate deniers often claim that solutions to global warming are part of a "global socialist agenda," Mann told LiveScience.

"The fact that the World Bank ? an entity committed to free market capitalism ? has weighed in on the threat of climate change and the urgency of acting to combat it, puts the nail in the coffin of that claim," he said.

A changing world

The report, issued by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Climate Analytics for the World Bank, urges nations to work to prevent the Earth from warming 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) past preindustrial averages. Already, global mean temperatures are running about 1.3 degrees F (0.8 degrees C) hotter than before the onset of the industrial revolution.

Likewise, carbon-dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is high and rising. As of September, the concentration was 391 parts per million, a record high, up from a preindustrial 278. That number is now rising by about 1.8 parts per million each year.

All of these changes are accompanied by ice loss, including accelerating melting in Greenland, according to research published this week. As a result, average sea level has risen between 6 and 8 inches (15 and 20 centimeters) or so on average around the world. [8 Ways Global Warming Is Already Changing the World]

Dire warnings

But what the World Bank warns of is an even bleaker future. Even if the world's nations deliver on their promises of emission limits and global warming mitigation, there is a 20 percent chance that the world will hit the 4 degrees C mark by 2100, according to the report. If emissions continue as is, the planet may reach that point by the 2060s.

International negotiators have agreed that warming should be limited to just half that, or 3.6 degrees F (2 degrees C), in that time. A world that is 2 degrees warmer would have its own consequences, but it is crucial to hold that line, the World Bank report argues. A 4-degree warming would mean a sea-level rise of 1.6 to 3.2 feet (0.5 to 1 meter) on average, with the tropics catching the brunt of the change.

Climate research also suggests tropical storms would strengthen and drought would increase across much of the tropical and subtropical world.

"A world in which warming reaches 4 degrees C above preindustrial levels (hereafter referred to as a 4 degree C world), would be one of unprecedented heat waves, severe drought, and major floods in many regions, with serious impacts on human systems, ecosystems, and associated services," the authors wrote in the World Bank report.

Climate scientists agree.

"I am inclined to think that things will break before we get there," Kevin Trenberth, a climate scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, said of a 4-degree-C world. Ecosystems would change so much and agriculture would be so disrupted that the result would likely be "major strife, conflicts and loss of population," Trenberth told LiveScience.

Among the flashpoints, according to the World Bank report, would be sparse water availability, food insecurity and loss of resources such as coral reefs, which are threatened by acidification as more carbon dioxide is dissolved in the oceans. Coral reefs provide not only food to many local economies, but also tourism dollars. Areas becoming unsustainable would likely lead to mass exodus, creating environmental refugees, Mann said. [10 Surprising Results of Global Warming]

Avoiding the 4-degree world

Avoiding the 4-degree-warmer world is a matter of political will, said Mann, who sees signs of optimism, including increased awareness and more calls to transition away from fossil fuels.

"The alternative energies (wind, solar, geothermal, etc) are there," Mann wrote in an email to LiveScience. "We just need to deploy and scale them up by investing immediately in the necessary infrastructure."

Slowing the warming may be as useful as stopping it, Trenberth said.

"It is not just the absolute amount of warming, but also the rate at which?
we change things to get there," he said.?"Two degrees warming in 50 years is extremely?stressful, but 2 degrees warming in 500 years is perhaps manageable through?adaptation."

If the world fails to act, the world will become a more disrupted, damaged place, the World Bank concluded ? and the poor will suffer most.

"The projected 4?C warming simply must not be allowed to occur ? the heat must be turned down," the authors wrote. "Only early, cooperative, international actions can make that happen."

What are the Most Popular Areas of Law Researched by Consumers ...

On the LexisNexis Blog, Amy Kovar, a product marketing manager, posts about research determining the most popular areas of law sought by consumers.

Among adult Internet users in the U.S. who sought an attorney in the past year, the five most common legal matters sought were the following:Legal Matter Sought in the Past Year

  • Real Estate - 21%
  • Living Will - 17%
  • Estate Planning - 16%
  • Last Will & Testament - 16%
  • Power of Attorney - 15%

Interestingly, there were no meaningful differences in the practice area results between those who sought out their legal matter using an online resource and those who did not ? the same five areas of practice were the most common regardless.?

We invite you to?download a complete copy of the study report.

iFixit pries open Google's Nexus 4, exposes somewhat stubborn battery (update: repairability verdict, LTE chip)

iFixit pries open Google's Nexus 4, exposes somewhat stubborn battery (update: repairability verdict)

The warranty-voiders over at iFixit decided to spend their Friday evening tearing into a freshly delivered Nexus 4 and have given us a peek inside Google's smartphone darling. After removing a pair of screws and spending a few minutes prying off the rear cover, the teardown specialists found that the backplate's sparkling exterior isn't the only thing that makes it special. In addition to serving a cosmetic purpose, the hind side plate packs a handful of pressure contacts that power the handset's NFC antenna and connect its wireless charging induction coil. Extracting the battery required evicting additional screws and a fair amount of elbow grease to wrangle the 2100 mAh pack free from adhesive. As for the motherboard, its removal was a relatively easy process comprised of freeing it from a couple of connectors. The outfit's final verdict on the device's repairability isn't in just yet, but you can tap the source link below to gaze at the LG-made phone's innards.

Update: iFixit has given Mountain View's smartphone a 7 out of 10 score in terms of repairability. The three point mark-down stems from a tricky battery removal experience and the glass front, which is fused to the display and its frame. Also, despite the lack of LTE support, a close look at the motherboard reveals a Qualcomm WTR1605L seven-band 4G LTE chip.

Exclusive: U.S. drug testing firm probed for alleged fraud, intimidation

(Reuters) - A federal grand jury in Boston is investigating Millennium Laboratories of San Diego, a fast-growing private company selling urine drug testing services to pain clinics across the United States.

The company not only is under investigation by the Justice Department for allegations of health care fraud but also for intimidating former employees, one who was portrayed in a slideshow at a company meeting as a corpse in a body bag.

Two of the ex-employees, who had raised concerns about Millennium's sales practices, also say they were followed for weeks by private investigators they believe were hired by the company.

No criminal charges have been filed, and Howard Appel, Millennium's president, said the company is cooperating fully with a Justice Department subpoena and did nothing wrong.

Appel said the company is a leader in business ethics in the estimated $4 billion industry that helps doctors monitor the soaring use and abuse of pain drugs. He said the grand jury may also be investigating Millennium's competitors.

Four witnesses, speaking publicly for the first time, described their grand jury testimony to Reuters in separate interviews. They said they were only asked about Millennium.

Reuters reviewed copies of five grand jury subpoenas seeking records on Millennium. Federal grand juries operate in secrecy to investigate matters that might constitute criminal conduct. Witnesses are free to describe what they said.

All four said they testified that Millennium was getting doctors to order unnecessary urine tests and charging excessive fees to Medicare and private insurers. Millennium has denied those accusations in civil lawsuits.

The body-bags picture was part of a PowerPoint presentation by Martin Price, the company's general counsel, the former employees said. He showed it at a national sales meeting in January in which Price described Millennium's success against its adversaries, according to one grand jury witness, former Millennium employee Jodie Strain.

Strain said grand jurors gasped when the body-bag image was projected onto a wall during her testimony October 3. She said the toe tag identified the corpse as Ed Zicari, a former regional manager Millennium was suing.

Appel declined to comment on the body bag picture. The United States attorney's office in Boston also declined to comment.

Other slides that were part of Price's presentation showed the logos of competing companies being riddled with bullet holes while gunfire sounded as if they were at a shooting range. Strain, a former senior sales representative, said the talk ended with an ominous warning: The company could not protect people who went "outside the Millennium family."

Strain and another person who witnessed the PowerPoint presentation, in a separate interview, said more than 200 sales people in the audience fell silent at the body bag picture.

"I took it as a complete warning and threat to not only not go to the competition but don't even question Millennium once you were no longer under their protection," Strain said in an interview.

"That was definitely quite scary," said another former employee who spoke on condition of anonymity. "It sent a very clear message not to mess with Millennium Labs." That person also said Price had told the staff to put away cell phones, which could have been used to take pictures, before the presentation. Through a company spokesman, Price declined to comment.

Shortly after Price's presentation, Strain said she told Zicari's girlfriend about the slide show because she feared for their safety. Strain said she was fired the next week.

Zicari and his girlfriend, Lori Martin, a former sales representative at the company, were being sued by Millennium at the time for allegedly taking confidential information when they left the company. Both also accused the company of misconduct. The suit was settled last summer.

Zicari and Strain are currently pursuing suits against Millennium for wrongful termination and other claims.

Appel described them as "disgruntled former employees" who were fired for cause, not for questioning company practices. He described Zicari as "alive and well and living in Texas."

Daniel Richman, a former federal prosecutor who teaches criminal law at Columbia University, said intimidating images such as a body bag representing a former employee could be "potent" evidence for obstruction charges or to argue bad intent on other charges if they are brought.

FOCUS ON SALES

The grand jury witnesses said most of their testimony focused on the company's sales practices. They said Millennium had aggressive pitches to pain clinics to order varieties of urine tests even when they were not needed, at up to $1,600 a test. Urine tests can show doctors whether their patients are taking extra pain drugs and whether they are taking their prescribed drugs.

The federal investigation is led by Susan Winkler, former chief of the health care fraud unit for the U.S. attorney in Boston. That unit has recovered more than $8.5 billion in settlements, fines and judgments since 2009.

Winkler signed the Millennium subpoenas and questioned the witnesses before the grand jury. Christina Sterling, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney, would not confirm or deny that a case was before the grand jury.

Marc Raspanti, a partner in a Philadelphia corporate-defense law firm, said grand juries generally only consider matters in which prosecutors have a strong suspicion of criminal behavior. It would take probable cause to indict, and evidence beyond a reasonable doubt to convict.

Millennium has not been called to testify.

"Not yet, but when called to do so, we will," Appel said.

The urine drug testing industry has taken off as the number of pain drug prescriptions in the United States grew from 30 million to 180 million a year over the last two decades, raising demand for monitoring, Appel said. The burgeoning industry has spawned two previously disclosed prosecutions and scores of suits and countersuits by companies accusing each other of wrongdoing.

In March, Calloway Laboratories of Woburn, Mass., paid $20 million to settle a Massachusetts state Medicaid case accusing it of paying kickbacks for unnecessary screening. Three former Calloway officials were sentenced to four years probation. And in 2010, Ameritox, based in Baltimore, Md., paid $16.3 million to settle similar claims by the federal government.

PREVIOUS DISPUTES

Millennium has been in heated legal disputes with both of those competitors, but at the same time, held itself out as a leader in industry accountability.

Millennium and its founder say they gave $2 million to the University of Washington in 2010 to study pain; $312,000 to a state of Florida program in 2010 to track prescription drugs; and $250,000 to a Duke University professor in April to host "a business summit on ethical practices in the medication monitoring industry."

"This is a new industry," Appel said. "A lot of companies are popping up, and it's important that all companies are held accountable to make sure they comply with a standard of ethics and accountability."

Millennium said in a civil suit filed September 18 that it received a Justice Department subpoena March 27 for "over 20 broad categories of company documents and materials." Appel declined to be more specific. In the civil suit, Millennium is seeking up to $5 million from an insurance policy to defend itself in the federal investigation, while the insurer, Allied World Assurance, says it will only pay $100,000. The case is pending.

Appel said the company plays a vital role in helping doctors and patients. He declined to talk about Millennium's size or revenues, but ex-employees say they were told it had grown into the biggest company in the sector.

The ex-employees told the grand jury that Millennium encouraged unnecessary and excessive testing in a variety of ways. They have made similar statements in civil suits.

Millennium sales tactics, they said, included a chart showing doctors how much they could boost their own income by increasing the number of urine drug tests they ordered. For instance, a $15 payment to test for one drug could balloon to about $800,000 a year if 20 people a day were tested and each urine sample was tested for 11 drugs, the chart said.

URINE CUP KICKBACKS?

Kelly Nelson, a former regional sales manager for Millennium, and Strain both said they testified to the grand jury in response to questions about a federal anti-kickback law. They said Millennium gave doctors free boxes of collection cups with embedded test strips -- worth $3 to $6 per cup - to encourage referrals, which the prosecutor questioned under an anti-kickback measure called the Stark Law.

"I told the grand jury I objected to the frequency of testing and the free cups," Nelson said. She said she was fired after complaining about the practices and is suing the company.

Millennium was founded in 2007 by Edward Slattery. His bio says he previously worked in real estate and broadcast and served eight years as Massachusetts commissioner of aeronautics. Last year, he won an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in San Diego. He declined to comment.

Price, Millennium's general counsel, joined the company in 2011 after working as its outside counsel for the giant lawfirm Hogan Lovells. His biographical sketch says he had a "prolific record" defending companies against government investigations, class actions and other legal cases.

At the time of the sales meeting, Millennium was suing Martin and Zicari for allegedly giving confidential information to a lawyer for a competing company. The suit was settled in July. During that period, Martin and Zicari said private detectives they believe were hired by a law firm for Millennium trailed them in the Dallas area and parked outside their homes. Millennium declined to say whether it had hired the detectives.

"After a time you come to the conclusion they're doing it to harass you more than anything else, or to intimidate you," Martin said.

5 Unique Team Logo Design Ideas to Create a Team Logo for Baseball

Baseball is, no doubt, the most popular game in the USA. There are more than 100 baseball teams currently playing in the USA and, in such a crowd, it is really a difficult task for one to maintain its identity. Particularly for the new ones, to get themselves noticed among the public is really a big problem. Of course, the game comes the first. If you are playing great, there is no way fans won't notice you. But, then, it's not so easy to become the best just after joining the wave. They must use some other tactics, as well, to catch the public's attention. The best suggestion, I can give is to create a team logo so unique and catchy that a baseball follower can't pass it over easily.

Convince the game admirers that your club has that fire in it that will make it unbeatable, sooner or later.

Clubs usually search the Internet for Design Ideas and Examples to decide the one fit for them. But there are usually similar sort of suggestions and they often end up at something very similar to their competitors. Here are five unique ideas that will give a distinctive mark to your logo.

? Bat and ball are the most common images in baseball logos. But the game is not just about bat and ball. You can add images of helmet, wicket, or gloves to give a characteristic yet relevant look to your emblem.

? Not many designs include the feature of speed but you can't win the game without being speedy. Add some windy look in your image to show how speedy your runners are

? Avoid badge-based shapes in your logo design - there are too conventional. Circular shapes, inspired from ball, will also give an ordinary look to your design. Experiment with different shapes like parabola, to show the movement of ball, or the shape of baseball field.

? The game is not just a physical activity - it involves a great deal of mental work, as well. From pre-planning the game strategy to using on-ground tactics, a player's mind keeps on working. Isn't it ironic that designers don't usually include brain in their sports logos? I'd suggest you to have it in yours; it will not only make it exclusive but will also tell the fans that you know the strategies and play with tactics.

? One important element missing from most baseball logos is unity - an element without which a team cannot be made. In most logos, there are usually images of a single player that doesn't truly represent a unit. Add a circle of baseball players in your team logo design, all pointing their bats to a center of the circle.

Meet Sarah McCartney. Copywriter/perfumer ? Creativepool Blog ...

Head writer at Lush from 1996 to 2010, Sarah is now Head of Ideas at the writing agency Afia. As an author she has penned ?The Fake Factor?, ?Online Marketing in 7 Days (for people who can?t avoid it any longer)?, and ?100 Great Branding Ideas?.
She has also worked as a Paris tour guide, a sax player, a planner in ad agencies, an event manager for The Guardian, a lecturer at London Metropolitan University, and she?s trained hundreds of people to be better writers. She has a master?s degree in marketing and corporate strategy and A-levels in physics, maths and further maths. She is a qualified Iyengar yoga teacher and acclaimed independent perfumer.

That?s a damned impressive list you have there. Of all your achievements, which one has given you the most pleasure?

In true yogic fashion, I ought to say that the ones that are giving me most pleasure are the ones that I?m doing now. But honestly? Playing the baritone sax in a big band on stage at the Newcastle City Hall. Packed out with old people in hats, who loved every moment of it. If there?s anything I regret, it?s not pushing harder to be a musician when my school shoved me into doing maths. But right now when I wake up in the morning, I want to get to the perfume lab and make scents.

So how did the copywriting come about ? was that an ambition or did you stumble into it?

Less of a stumble, more of an inevitable slide I started to do a bit of writing while I was at the Guardian, writing house ads for education events, holiday offers and T-shirts. I did a short piece for Education Guardian about going back to university after 15 years, then 1000 words for Weekend Guardian on passing your motorbike test. While I was doing the MA, I wrote a paper on how new technology might affect retail ? this was 1996 when there were only three online shops, all in San Francisco ? and I based it on Lush, the only retailers I knew personally. My paper helped Lush to get the funding they needed to expand from four shops to 25. After that, Mark Constantine, boss of Lush invited me to write the Lush Times as a reward.

What about today ? is the job as fulfilling as you thought it would be?

What can I say? Some days it is. Some days I do great work (I think) and then the client says, ?We?ve changed the concept now, so we won?t be using it.? Even when I get paid for it that?s just a huge waste of my life and I hate waste. But I do like sitting quietly and putting down a couple of good phrases.

The days when I train people, that always feels great, if knackering. I love it when they?ll realise they no longer have to be boring when they?re writing for business. Out come the red pens, swathes of dull text get crossed out and smiles spread over their faces. Training ought to be entertaining, I think. They laugh, they remember. And I like speaking at conferences. Basically I like telling people what to do, and I love it when they listen.

Looking back at your work on Lush, one of the things I admire the most is that your copy sets out to entertain. Did it the powers that be take some persuading to go with this rather zany approach?

The powers let me do whatever I wanted, once they?d worked out that it sold loads of products. Also, they were making products to entertain people so the writing style fitted nicely. One Christmas Lush Times got a 32% response rate (that was before t?Internet was invented, like). But I?d always make sure that I got the facts right, because Lush make marvellous products with lovely ingredients and they work. So I?d write entertaining copy that sold stuff; it was never there just to be funny. The people who copied Lush?s style (many, including some huge brands) forgot that, and wrote funny copy that tired a bit too hard, missing out the important reasons to buy the products. Eejits.

Personally I?m rather fond of copy that doesn?t take itself too seriously. Too often a copywriters default setting is ?middle of the road? Do you usually set out to bring some personality to your writing?

Given the choice I like to make people laugh whatever I?m doing. That?s not always appropriate, but I do try to avoid being dull. If it?s interesting people will read it. I hope.
It does depend who I?m writing for, of course. I?m a mimic. I can copy people?s voices and I can copy their writing styles. I think all decent copywriters can adapt to fit their client?s brands and I don?t get precious about having to put my own stamp on something. Unless it actually has my name on it; then I can be a right diva. In short, no. I don?t set out to put my personality in there. If someone?s paying you to write for them, you should try to sound like them, not yourself. If they?ve invited you in because they want your style, that?s different.

Tell us about your workspace. What sort of things do you have around you?

Oh blimey, I have absolutely everything anyone could possibly need, all within grabbing distance. I am the opposite of minimal. Many people look at it in horror and ask how I can possibly work there. Some run screaming from the room. Most can?t even get past the obstacle course between the door and the desk. I?ve loads of stationery, for just in case. I get it from all over, but particularly Japan. In one room I?ve got all my writing kit. Fountain pens, notebooks, reference books, markers, postcards? ?There?s even a computer. Downstairs I?ve got a yoga studio; where other people would have their living room I have bare floor with yoga mats, bolsters, blocks, bricks, belts and blankets. Then I?ve got the perfumery, around 350 aromachemicals and natural materials and a fridge full of vintage perfume that?s bigger than the kitchen fridge for food. I like the idea of minimal, but there?s always something more interesting to do than tidy.

Every job has its challenges but what would you say has been your most testing writing brief so far?

Testing, that?s a good word. How would I define testing? 60,000 words in two months for the Christmas Lush Times was always strenuous but also good fun because I enjoyed writing about the products, knowing that the customers were looking forward to reading it. Last year it was a little book of short stories about the Lee Jeans company; I did some research and found out that the reason he?d moved to Kansas to set up his business was not the reason the company usually quoted. We got around it? Recently it was tin copy for top quality Chinese tea that?s going to be sold for about $50 an ounce in the US. It had to be lovely, persuasive and subtle and very very short. The opposite of Lush.

With Christmas just around the corner, how about we talk perfumes? I hear you have developed one or two that are regarded very highly.

How kind. Yes.I like to tell stories in scents as well as words. My perfumes have been praised by Josephine Fairley, editor of The Beauty Bible, and five of them are going into Les Senteurs, London?s coolest scent shop. Urura?s Tokyo Caf?, The Lion Cupboard and Evil Max have their own small fan clubs. I?m an indie perfumer; I make perfumes on a small scale, around a litre a go. I sell them at 4160Tuesdays.com, since you ask.
I?ve just set up a crowdfunding project: 10 Scents? Worth. It?s to raise the dosh to make ten new perfumes and it?s there until 8 December at http://www.sponsume.com/project/10-scents-worth

I?ve also been working with London University?s philosophy department on perception and memory. I like to make scents that remind people of something that makes then happy. Sunshine and Pancakes is the scent of a summer day at a British beach. Most of them have stories behind them; I rarely make something just to smell nice, but fortunately they often do.

My next commission is for Odette Toilette?s marvellous perfume and poetry project, Penning Perfumes. I have to make it to the bottom of the dark ocean depths where water pressure and decomposing sea creatures form a dense inhospitable home for real, very ugly mermaids. I don?t think I?ll be selling much of that one.

Not to mention it can be a blast once you find your groove!

Perhaps there are some insider secrets that ?insiders? wrongly assume ?outsiders? already know. This slideshow is my humble attempt to ?crack the code? and unveil those tips, tricks and secrets so that everyone can find their way to fitness and establish a routine that truly sticks.

Discounted Data Recovery Prices for Victims of Superstorm Sandy ...

Being a data recovery service based in South Florida, you might imagine that we have weathered our fair share of hurricanes. Personally, I have lived here since 1970 and have been through a few moderate to severe storms. Thankfully I can say that I have never been through a storm as devastating as Superstorm Sandy.

Superstorm Sandy

Superstorm Sandy

The sheer magnitude of destruction of this ?perfect storm? is truly hard to comprehend. One can only imagine just how many times ?Oh My God!? was uttered as an involuntary reaction to pictures and videos of the damage. Houses, possessions, cars, belongings and basically any material items can be replaced. People cannot.

From the comfort of a mild and sunny South Florida afternoon with temperatures in the 70?s in November, it can be easy to type statistics. I?ve read that the death toll has exceeded 100 in the United States, and of course there are numerous deaths reported from the Caribbean islands.

It can be easy to overlook the fact these ?statistics? were someones husband, wife, children, grandparent etc. This type of loss can never be re-gained. Only time can heal a loss so profound as someones life.

Hurricane Sandy Damage

Hurricane Sandy Damage

There are just as many stories of heroism and survival as there is devastation. The undeniable spirit of recovery and fortitude that resides in all of us is now back on display in full force across the Northeast. As of today November 9th, I read that FPL (Florida Power and Light) has dispatched more than 1,000 employees and contractors to assist in the recovery.

I would not even know where to begin in calculating the number of computers that will no longer boot up due to storm related damage. Something as seemingly innocuous as losing electricity, even for a brief period of time can result in an electrical surge, spike or brownout conditions that can wreak havoc on sensitive electronics. One such device that usually is not given much thought until after the fact is a computer?s hard drive. Computers are basically ?disposable? electronic items, such as television sets, radios, microwave ovens etc. As a data recovery consultant, in my opinion the most important item in that category may very well be you or your computer. Specifically the computer?s hard drive. And of course I?m not speaking of the actual hard drive hardware, but rather the data that has been saved to that hardware.

No matter how nice your 60? flat screen television or stainless steel refrigerator may be, there is no critical data that is stored on it. With homeowners insurance and a lot of patience and perseverance these items can be replaced. I also know that within the past few years more insurance companies are taking a closer look at digital data and? intellectual property.

As people continue to dig out of the rubble and try to put their lives back together, there will be hurdles to overcome. The rebuild and recovery process may take longer and be more extensive than initial forecasts.

Hurricane Sandy - Superstorm Sandy Damage

Devastating Fire Damage from Sandy

It?s somewhat awkward to say the least, to be blogging about someone?s lost computer files when in fact that same person may be struggling to stay warm tonight or provide food and shelter for their family. However as more and more people and businesses dig themselves out from the destruction and move forward with rebuilding and recovery, the value of critical data will be a hot topic for many.

The only person that can accurately place a worth or dollar value on data is the person who owns the data. Not too terribly long ago disaster recovery primarily entailed rebuilding and or recovering physical property.

Fast forward to 2012 where data can be ever so critical and crucial for daily operation of a business or it can be a persons only valuable ?possession?. It can be a ?lifetime? of family photos, hours and hours of research, an entire media collection, far too many types of files or data too possibly mention.

Just as of last night on the National news I was hearing of reports of 369,000 people have applied for FEMA aid. Considering that this storm was the size of Europe, I imagine that those figures too will also increase.
There are reports that some towns in New York and New Jersey that have still yet to see any type of relief or aid including The Red Cross, which by most accounts has been doing an outstanding job with the resources available.

Today, November 12th there are still 46,000 people still without power on Long Island alone.

I could research and write for days on various aspects of the Superstorm Sandy, the anomalies that made this the ?perfect storm?, the damage in all it?s forms and finally the recovery efforts that are under way.

Hurricane Sandy Recovery

Hurricane Sandy Rebuild & Recovery Underway

The small bit of relief that ECO Data Recovery can provide was the originally intended subject of this blog post. Once I started writing, it seems that there is just so many aspects of this storm that can be covered.

Besides contributing to the Red Cross directly, we have decided that the most beneficial way that we can help is to provide some pricing relief for victims of the damage of hurricane Sandy.

From now through the end of the year? ECO Data Recovery will offer extremely discounted hard drive data recovery. We know that there is still untold stories of damage, destruction and ultimately recovery. As these stories unfold, and people try to put their lives back in order, some businesses and individuals will need to recover data from desktops, laptops, and servers.

If you, your business, or anyone that you know needs to recover data from a hard drive and you are located in one of the states affected by Hurricane Sandy, we can help.

Call ECO Data Recovery for special discounts on Data Recovery Services from all types of hard drives. You could save hundreds or possibly even thousands of dollars.

WARNING for Water Damaged Hard Drives!

  • If you do have a hard drive that has suffered from any type of water damage, do not attempt to dry it out. Providing that the damage is not too extensive, a quality data recovery service can recover data from water damaged hard drives.
  • Do NOT try to power up a water damaged hard drive.
  • Place hard drive in zip lock baggie with moist paper towel. (This will help to prevent the drive from drying.)
  • In most cases the water itself does not damage the platters, but rather the residue and minerals left over from the water.
  • Contact a professional data recovery service ASAP to make arrangements to have your hard drive recovered.
(Delaying matters could make recovery efforts more difficult.)

Singles Day: China's online shopping holiday

BEIJING (AP) ? Lei Shujie, a designer in Shanghai, piled up a wish list for Sunday, a quirky holiday dubbed "Singles Day" that has grown into China's ? and possibly the world's ? busiest online shopping day.

Clothes, a pillow, a cabinet to give a friend ? Lei put off buying until Sunday, when retailers promised discounts of up to 70 percent. "The prices are irresistible," she said.

Singles Day was begun by Chinese college students in the 1990s as a version of Valentine's Day for people without romantic partners. The timing was based on the date Nov. 11, or "11.11" ? four singles. Unattached young people would treat each other to dinner or give gifts to woo that special someone and end their single status.

That gift-giving helped to turn it into a major shopping event as sellers of everything from jewelry to TVs to cars saw a marketing opportunity and launched Singles Day sales. It is China's answer to Cyber Monday in the United States ? the day after Thanksgiving weekend, when online Christmas shopping begins and merchants have their busiest sales day.

Companies that are rushing to cash in on the holiday range from Alibaba Group, operator of China's biggest e-commerce platforms, to rival platforms such as 360buy Ltd., mom-and-pop companies that sell online and delivery services.

In the first 13 hours of selling on Sunday, the 50,000-plus merchants on Alibaba's consumer-oriented Tmall.com took in 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion), the company announced on its microblog account.

That would top the total of $1.25 billion that research firm comScore said U.S. online retailers took in last year on Cyber Monday and might make Singles Day the biggest e-commerce sales day on record.

"This is very, very big for us," Steve Wang, vice president of Tmall.com and head of website operations, said in a phone interview. The company said on its website that Sunday might be the "biggest e-shopping orgy ever."

The spending binge will be welcome news for communist leaders who want to shift the basis of growth in the world's second-largest economy from trade and investment to consumer spending and service industries. Weak global demand for Chinese exports has added to the urgency of ramping up domestic consumption.

China has the world's biggest population of Internet users, with 538 million people online. Its population of online shoppers also is the biggest at 193 million, versus 170 million for the United States, according to Boston Consulting Group. It trails the U.S. and Japan in online spending but, despite average incomes less than one-tenth the American level, is forecast to rise to first place as early as 2015.

The Communist Party's latest five-year development plan calls for more than quadrupling annual e-commerce volume from 2010 levels to 18 trillion yuan ($2.9 trillion) by 2015. The party tries to block access to online material deemed subversive or pornographic but promotes Web use for business and education.

"The Internet today in China is similar to television in the 1960s and '70s in the West ? the place where consumers congregate and companies need to locate," Boston Consulting Group said in an April report.

Alibaba, founded by a former English teacher, Jack Ma, grew into one of the world's biggest e-commerce players by linking Chinese suppliers with Western manufacturers and retailers. It branched into consumer sales with the 2003 launch of Taobao, which operates Tmall.com. Alibaba also operates China's biggest online payment system, Alipay.

Tmall.com accounted for 45.1 percent of business-to-consumer online sales in China in the three months ending in September, according to Analysys International, a research firm in Beijing. 360buy was in second place with 17.4 percent. Boston Consulting Group said more products were sold through Taobao in 2010 ? about 48,000 per minute ? than at China's top five bricks-and-mortar retailers combined.

"Alibaba has so many assets that they can integrate that it's hard to compete with them," said Mark Natkin, managing director of Marbridge Consulting, a technology consulting firm in Beijing.

Other rivals include clothing retailer Vancl.com, bookseller Dangdang.com, Amazon.com Inc.'s joint venture with a Chinese partner, and traditional retailers such as consumer electronics chain Suning Ltd. that have expanded online. Walmart Stores Inc., which operates 340 outlets in China, boosted its online presence last month by expanding its stake in online retailer Yihaodian to a controlling 51 percent.

In addition to its e-commerce platform used by other merchants, 360buy also is China's biggest online retailer, selling consumer electronics and other goods directly to customers.

The source of Singles Day's rise as China's online shopping day is a matter of debate by Chinese commentators and industry analysts.

Some cite demographics and timing: University graduates who adopted the holiday earn more and shop online. Singles Day comes as people receive monthly paychecks and need to buy winter clothes. Unlike other events such as the Lunar New Year, China's biggest family holiday, it involves few other expenses such as travel or banquets, leaving more money for gifts.

And there is the romantic angle that might prompt shoppers to open their wallets.

"This is about giving a gift that will woo that perfect someone," Natkin said. "If you play your cards right, you only need to make that purchase once."

Lei, the Shanghai designer, wound up buying only the pillow from her shopping list for 118 yuan ($18) because other discounts weren't as big as she hoped.

"I will wait to see if I can get them later," she said.

Companies began preparing for Sunday months in advance.

At its headquarters in Hangzhou, southwest of Shanghai, Alibaba set up 200 lounge chairs for its 800-strong staff to rest during the day. The company rented 180 rooms at nearby hotels for longer breaks.

On Tmall.com, called Tian Mao, or "Sky Cat," in Chinese, goods ranged from clothes, books and furniture to discounts on restaurant meals and travel packages. An auto dealer in the southern city of Shangrao offered 23 percent off BMW 3-series luxury cars ordered Sunday.

China's delivery companies had 800,000 employees working Sunday, including 65,000 temporary workers hired for the holiday, the China Daily newspaper said, citing the country's delivery industry association.

One of the biggest, YTO Express Co. Ltd. in Shanghai, planned to have 30,000 vehicles on the road, the newspaper said, and expanded its daily handling capacity by 50 percent to 6 million packages for the day.

Clinton says US to increase anti-poaching efforts

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Alarmed that rebel militias could be profiting from a sharp increase in the poaching of elephants and rhinos, the U.S. plans to step up efforts to build a global coalition to combat the illegal wildlife trade, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says.

Speaking before animal activists and several international ambassadors, Clinton told a crowd in Washington on Thursday that poachers are using helicopters, night vision goggles and automatic weapons to hunt down wildlife. She wants world leaders to increase their focus on combating the problem and said that she and President Barack Obama will speak to Asian leaders about it next week at the East Asia Summit.

"Some of you might be wondering why a Secretary of State is keynoting an event about wildlife trafficking and conservation," Clinton said on Thursday, before answering her own question: "Over the past few years wildlife trafficking has become more organized, more lucrative, more widespread and more dangerous than ever before."

Elephants across Africa are being slaughtered by the thousands for their ivory tusks, which are shipped to Asia, particularly China, and made into ivory trinkets. In Tanzania alone, 10,000 elephants a year are said to be killed by poachers.

Rhino horns are in great demand globally, particularly in Southeast Asia, ground up for use as alleged aphrodisiacs and in traditional medicines or turned into decorative dagger handles.

Iain Douglas-Hamilton, the founder of Save the Elephants, said Clinton's speech "signifies the will of the United States to tackle the scourge of wildlife poaching and elevates the issue internationally. Now it remains to share awareness with the Chinese and for the U.S. and China to exert joint leadership to lower the demand for ivory before it is too late."

Yao Ming, the oversized basketball star from China, visited Kenya in August to raise awareness in China about the animal deaths required to supply ivory to China's middle class. He is taking part in a film called "The End of the Wild."

Clinton said the U.S. will reach out to leaders around the world to forge a consensus on wildlife protection. The U.S. also plans to launch initiatives and expand and strengthen enforcement of wildlife laws. She noted with regret that the U.S. is the second-largest destination market for illegally trafficked wildlife.

Elsewhere on Friday, a South African court sentenced a Thai national to 40 years for selling rhino horns. Chumlong Lemtongthai pleaded guilty to paying prostitutes who posed as hunters to harvest rhino horns, which were then sold on Asia's traditional medicine market, according to the South African Press Association. At least 458 of South Africa's endangered rhinos have been illegally killed this year ? a record number.

4 Insider Secrets to Holiday Travel Savings

Halloween is just over, but the Christmas ads are starting already starting. It almost seems like it?s too late score a travel deal over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Instead of just going online and searching for peak holiday weekend travel days, Peter Greenberg shares how you can make it home for the holidays, score a beach vacation and avoid those seasonal mark ups.

This year, I?m working to make PeterGreenberg.com your go-to resource for all your holiday travel. In addition to our regular insider travel advice and seasonal deals, every Friday Travel Correspondent Alyssa Caverley has put together a new ?Holiday Travel: How to Series? to show you how fly home for less, book holiday hotels, find free Wi-Fi, minimize data bills,? survive a long holiday drive, and more. Can?t wait for Friday, here are four insider travel tips you can use in planning today.

1. Travel in the Off Season

If you?re traveling for leisure this winter, pack a coat and get ready for some culture. It?s the off-season in colder climates but not for museums, theater and restaurants. Montreal has winter sports, its own ice village and the famous Montreal en Lumiere festival. Book a 2-night minimum stay through December 31, 2012 and get half off the second night, plus transit tickets and a coupon book with discounts worth up to $200. Or think Iceland: You can fly to Iceland from Boston from just $555 on Icelandair, or continue on to Europe with a stopover in Reykjavik.Head to Chicago, which is teeming with museums, restaurants and winter events. Hotel occupancy last December was just 55.4 percent, meaning you get to avoid the crowds. Go in early February, and you can take advantage of the great deals at Chicago?s Restaurant Week.

2. Pick Your Dates

All November and December travel dates are not the same. Rates vary wildly from day to day and you?ll find the greatest savings if you travel on the actual holidays?Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and Christmas Eve offer the most savings. Remember, turkey tastes good any time of day. If you?re traveling for leisure, then look to travel during that ?dead week? between Thanksgiving and Christmas for maximum savings.

3. Find a Real Travel Deal

Many packages are called ?deals,? but it pays to read the fine print. Free hot chocolate doesn?t make a deal. Look for how much you are saving on the room rate and then look for additional value adds. Remember to use all your resources when looking for a deal. From flash sales to Twitter promotions, offers come in hourly. If you need help weeding them out, PeterGreenberg.com reviews all the offers and publishes the day?s best in the Daily Deal feature.

4. Look for Freebies

It?s nice to score a deal, but the best deals are actually free. This week, it?s your last chance to enter the? Fall Sweepstakes, live until November 8. One lucky person can win the Grand Prize: a 4-night, all inclusive stay for two at the Hard Rock Hotel Cancun with $500 airfare credit and a 30-minute massage. To enter the sweepstakes, simply sign up for the daily e-newsletter, which has the latest travel news and tips as well as the live sweepstakes link.

Top games to watch out for this November - Video Games | Games ...

The gaming season gets better as the year comes to an end. The biggest highlight of October was of course Assassins Creed III, but was that the biggest game of the year? Well if your answer is yes, then please go through the list of games that are yet to hit store shelves in November, after which you may want to revise your opinion.

Shortlisting the games set to launch in November was quite a task, but we think we have a pretty comprehensive list that will appeal to all a large array of gamers and will definitely burn a big hole in your pocket if you decide to pick all of them up.

So, here?s a quick look at seven AAA games to watch out for in November.

Halo 4
The name says it all. It's a Halo game, it's the fourth title in the adventures of Master Chief and it is a brand new trilogy. The game is an Xbox 360 exclusive and the story arc is set 5 years after the events of Halo 3. There is an ancient evil that threatens the entire universe and it?s up to you to don the role of Master Chief and save the day.

Besides having a killer single player campaign, the Halo franchise has been credited with having a kickass multiplayer. And we are certain that that Halo 4 will not disappoint in that regard.

Halo 4 will be available on store shelves from November 6 for Rs. 3,299. Those looking to pick up the Limited Edition will have to shell out Rs. 4,599.

Call of Duty Black Ops II
Developed by Treyarch, Black Ops II is set in the shadows of another Black Ops mission. Black Ops II is the ninth game in the Call of Duty franchise and will be available on all the consoles out there ? Xbox 360, PC, PS3, Wii U. Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified will debut the franchise on Sony?s handheld, the PS Vita.

In recent years, Call of Duty?s multiplayer mode has taken gained prominence over the single player campaign. The single player campaign of the game, though cinematic in nature, is considered really short. Nonetheless, the multiplayer mode makes up for the longevity of the game.

Call of Duty Black Ops II will be available on November 13 for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 for Rs. 3,299.

Disney Epic Mickey 2
Epic Mickey was a Wii exclusive but the sequel has gone multiplatform. Gamers will don the role of Disney?s favourite mouse ? Mickey Mouse, and for the first time ever, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit -- Walt Disney's first cartoon star.

The two characters will return to Wasteland and join forces to save the day. Both the characters have their own unique abilities. Mickey has his trusted magical paintbrush that wields paint and thinner to manipulate the environment and Oswald has a powerful remote control that lets him command electricity.

The game will be available on store shelves on November 18 and will be priced at Rs. 2,319 for the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

ZombiU
The Wii U hasn't been officially launched in India but we are sure that many of those who can get their hands on the console from abroad already have. ZombiU is a Wii U launch title and places players in the middle of London circa 2012. A plague has converted the population into zombies and it is up to you to save the day.

ZombiUis a first person shooter and implies some interesting gameplay mechanics. One cool feature is that it puts players in the body of a different survivor each time they die. This also gives players the ability to track and kill their previous character that is now infected.

ZombiU infects the Wii U on November 18th 2012.

Hitman: Absolution
Agent 47 is back! In this adventure our cold-blooded assassin has been betrayed by the ones he once trusted and finds himself drawn into a dark conspiracy. Has he finally met his match?

The game has gone bold with an open world setting. Agent 47 has the ability to monitor his targets movements in the same way that Assassin?s Creed has ?eagle vision.? Classic elements such as costumes and tasteful techniques of assassination make a comeback here, along with new gameplay elements.

Hitman: Absolution will be available for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 on November 20 for Rs. 2,799, and Rs. 999 for the PC.
